Each semester, BikeShare rents out bikes to the MUN community (students, staff, faculty) for $50 ($20 fee and $30 deposit which will be returned to you when you return the bike). We have set days and times during which people can come down, pick out a bike, fill out some paperwork, and ride away. Keep an eye on this website, our Facebook group BikeShare St. John’s, or email us at munbikeshare(at)gmail(dot)com to be added to our mailing list if you’d like to be notified of dates and times for bike rentals.

You can get your very own BikeShare bike for just $50 ($20 fee and $30 deposit which will be returned to you when you return the bike) for a semester. Open to all MUN faculty, staff and students. Make sure you have your MUN I.D., a bike lock, helmet and cash when you come to pick out your bikes. The bikes are stored in the lower level of the Earth Sciences parking garage.
We do not have bike locks or helmets for rent or sale, but we have received a number of emails asking where to get them. There are a number of bike shops in town, and any larger department style store will probably have both helmets and bike locks. (One not too far from campus is the Canadian Tire on Elizabeth Ave).
The bike is yours for the semester but must be returned at a prearranged date and time, usually around exam time at the end of the semester. If you need to return your bike earlier or later, please get in touch with us by email. Please remember that as a volunteer run organization, it simplifies our life a lot if everyone does their best to return their bike during the prearranged time slot!

i think this is an awesome idea, and its so hard to find used bikes in st.john’s and new ones are just too much money

Bike Rentals should be happening in the next two weeks (we will post and email out the time very soon).
BikeShare does not currently rent or sell helmets or locks. I don’t know of anywhere you can rent them, either. You will probably have to buy them at one of the bike shops downtown (http://thescope.ca/2009/05/cycling-index/ for a list of stores) or at a Canadian Tire or equivalent.

Yes, an exchange student can definitely use this! It is really hard to say whether the bikes will all be taken in one day… I think it depends on the weather ; ) We do have more bikes that are not ready to be rented out right now and they may be repaired and lent out this summer as well.
